Is people a singular or a plural word

Is “people” a singular or a plural word?

'People' is as well a countable noun as an uncountable noun.

An example of a purely uncountable noun is 'water', which generally needs to be preceeded by words that limit and define what the speaker means: 'a glass of water'.

'People' is plural when it refers to human beings in general or to many human beings together.
'People' is normally used as the plural of 'person', instead of 'persons'.

When 'people' refers to a particular racial, ethnic or national group it is singular, and the plural is 'peoples'.
E.
g.
'The British people drive on the left side of the road.
' ; 'The peoples of Africa are little known'.

Plural: as in "more than one person".
Pay attention to the predicates that get paired with "people".

People have fun.
People like fruit.
Plural words have "singular" (without an "s") verbs.
Exhibit B:
My sisters have fun.
       vs.
   Carol has fun.
My brothers like fruit.
     vs.
Ralph likes fruit.
You might get confused by the fact that sometimes we see "peoples.
" In this case, the speaker is referring to "more than one more than one person", which is a bit confusing until you think of "people" as a gathering or group.
"Peoples" then becomes "more than one gathering", like when someone says, "The culture of the indigenous peoples is rich.
" "Indigenous peoples" means that there can be more than one tribe or faction of people.

“People” is a collective noun that can signify multiple individuals without the addition of the usual plural suffix “-s” – e.
g.
, “Many people are [not is] going to the concert.

It is usually used without the plural “-s” suffix, but in some circumstances it is used with the “-s” plural – e.
g.
, “I would like our nation to live in harmony with all the peoples of the earth.

Just as a team or staff can be considered both singular and plural, so too can people.
a proud people
a primitive people
